Francis of Assisi and the Choice of Poverty

Saint Francis of Assisi gave up all worldly goods to live according to the Gospel, embracing poverty and humility. He believed true freedom comes from trusting God rather than possessions. His first companion, Bernard of Quintavalle, followed this path by selling all he owned and giving the money to the poor, becoming a model for the Franciscan way of life. Francis’s vision of poverty is most clearly expressed in The Sacred Exchange between Saint Francis and Lady Poverty, an allegory that shows his joyful commitment to Gospel poverty.
